A grinder is a tool commonly found in shops because they're wonderful for creating a very fine finish on a product or for making subtle cuts in material. The element of a grinder that makes it so effective is the abrasive wheel; this wheel has qualities that will vary depending on what kind of grinding is needed. Some wheels are very large, some are small, and the abrasive materials used can vary tremendously. Often a wheel is made of diamond but there are many other abrasives that are commonly used.
Because grinders are by definition hardworking machines that operate under tremendous stress and can suffer because of the nature of their function, buying a used grinder can be complicated. At the same time, it's understandable that a company might be reluctant to invest in a new grinding machine. Getting advice and a good deal on a used grinder - or used grinders, in the familiar situation where more than one grinder is needed to achieve an end - is where Greasy Machines comes in.
A grinding machine is constructed of two basic elements. There is the abrasive grinding wheel and a bed that holds the piece being worked on and keeps it stable while the grinding wheel works on the piece. The machine is flexible in that the grinder can be manipulated: either it can move over and across the stable piece or the piece itself can be moved while the wheel remains stable. The nature of a specific project determines which mode is preferable. Similarly, the abrasive material used on a project will be determined by the nature of the material being worked with. Whether one is working in such a way that the worked piece is stable or the grinding wheel is stable, CNC or NC controls can be used to assure a very high level of control over the grinding wheel. This makes the grinder an extremely important machine for countless industries; a high-quality grinder will make an engineer smile.
Grinders work on a simple principle: they sculpt the work material by using abrasion. The grinding wheel when it is moving generates a significant amount of heat, which can be dangerous if not regulated by the use of a coolant. The coolant is applied to the worked material so as to avoid overheating that would be harmful to the workpiece, the grinding wheel and machine, and the operator of the machine.
There are several types of grinding machines, and Greasy Machines can provide clients with access to whichever type is needed. Among the common types of grinders found in industry today are:
- Bench grinders, which operate using two different wheels with different sizes of abrasive materials. These are affixed to a workbench and are used to rough out and finish workpiece; it's useful for shaping tools or repairing small areas on tools that need to be recalibrated. In general, bench grinders are manually operated;
- Belt grinders, which are used for finishing metal workpieces and can perform delicate work such as deburring;
- Cylindrical grinders, which can have several grinding wheels and operate on an object which is spinning;
- Surface grinders, which can be either manually operated or designed with CNC controls. Surface grinders operate with a "head" that the operator lowers to the workpiece; the workpiece is then manipulated to move back and forth along the grinding wheel.
Tool and Cutter grinders are specialized toolroom grinders.
Jig grinders are multipurpose and are used to do fine finishing work; these grinders are designed to perform extremely precise operations. A jig grinder can be operated manually, as a semi-automatic, or on a complete CNC program.
