A plasma cutter is among the most efficient of the cutting machines available for high-volume cutting. Though many associate plasma cutting machines with prohibitively high costs, costs are falling. Plasma cutters are easy to use and provide high-quality finished product. Plasma cutters use jets to force ionized gas or compressed air through a nozzle at high velocity. When the forced stream is combined with an electrical charge, some of the gas is converted to plasma as it moves from the torch nozzle to the metal. The plasma melts the metal along a programmed or designed line, and the excess material is blown away, leaving a fine, high quality cut piece.
Plasma cutters are good with steel and non-ferrous materials that measure less than an inch in thickness. Plasma cutting is very fast and the work can be extraordinarily detailed. CNC (Computerized Numeric Control) plasma cutters make the cutting process completely automatic. Very elaborate designs can be created with stunning speed and efficiency with CNC plasma cutters.
CNC laser cutters also offer very high cutting speeds, extreme accuracy, and general ease of use. Because of the high investment levels involved with acquiring CNC laser cutters, some people are leery of a CNC laser machine. However, the reliability and accuracy of these machines can make them an extraordinarily good investment depending on the nature of the work you need done. The CNC laser operates off your CAD drawing and produces very fine work. Laser cutting is very common in American industry today, and many manufacturers lean toward it because they are comfortable with it and feel that the set-up costs are worthwhile.
CNC water jet cutters are growing in popularity in American manufacturing. These apply the basic principles of erosion in very directed fashion. The water jet forces highly pressurized water (or water plus an abrasive material) through a nozzle to cut, carve, or otherwise manipulate the selected material. Water jet cutters are reliable and can be used on a wide range of materials, though they will not function well with certain types of glass or ceramic and should not be purchased for use with these materials.
With each type of cutter discussed here, CNC equipment means that it is possible for your company to extend its manufacturing power exponentially. The CNC machine is given its pattern to follow, in the form of your CAD drawing, and it follows the given directions for piece after piece as desired. The "controller" in the computer system will run the cutting machinery for as long as desired. The glory of a CNC cutting operation is that it achieves what was once impossible: complicated designs, even ones with elaborate curves, became as easy to produce (in any quantity) as a design with straight cuts. Very complicated designs can be created in a short period of time using CNC cutters; whether a company favors water jet, laser, or plasma cutters is determined by the nature of the material to be manipulated. CNC-operated machinery leads to an increase in work flow, a reduction in production error rates, and overall increased efficiency. It is easy to understand why companies rely on CNC cutting operations to maximize productivity and reliability.
