Welding is the joining of two separate parts, usually two metal pieces. Very high levels of heat is applied to the pieces and the pieces are pressed together at the points where they've begun to melt; the melted areas fuse together and create a bond that is permanent. Welding is used in almost every kind of manufacturing industry, and there are many different types of welding equipment that are suited for different purposes. The method of welding used most often in American industry today is oxyacetylene welding, which is also called oxyfuel welding. It's used for welding pipes, tubes, and innumerable types of repair work. Acetylene is combusted in oxygen and the process results in a flame temperature of remarkably powerful, concentrated heat: the flame will blast at roughly 3100° Celsius. The flame will not be as tightly focused as what's seen with an electric arc welder, but it is excellent for welding high alloy steels and is very reliable. Other gases are also used in welding, and you'll see welding equipment on the market that reflect this; these different types of equipment are often used for very specific purposes. For example, high-precision welders working on jewelry will often use a water-based welding process.
There are modern welding methods that circumvent entirely the process of melting materials that want joining. One common method that does not involve melting is called ultrasonic welding, and here vibration is used at very high frequencies, and under very high levels of pressure, to create energy that melds the workpieces together. This is an excellent method of welding plastics together, and it's also effective with some metals.
